Charming tale that takes you to a family summer camp in England, just after the second World War. The many characters become like a circle of friends and their various adventures like the scenes in a soap opera.

Noel Streatfeild wrote light romantic novels under the pen name Susan Scarlett, and a small British press has reprinted a few. This one is a delightful story of two theatrical families putting on a show at a seaside holiday camp in 1946. As in Streatfeild's children's books, the theatrical milieu is wonderfully done, as are the families' relationships and interactions. It's not Ballet Shoes, but it's fun. (And the spoiled heroine is named Dulcie, just as in Dancing Shoes, which leads me to wonde [...]

Streatfield apparently did not think much of these 'light romances' she wrote under the Scarlett pseudonym, but there is a lot more to this than the dismissive 'light romance' categorisation suggests (okay, there are romantic entanglements involved but they are not exactly central). It's a charming story about two families with a stage background putting on concert parties in a holiday camp just after World War II. Kudos to Greyladies for bringing it back to our attention.
