4.5 Hearts--"Tell me what you wanted because you have to know, Golden Boy, what you're getting here. What I'm giving you is like nothing you've ever had. Once you've had this, you're done. I'm branding you, going make you, your ass, mine"Where to begin? This itty bitty story about a boy who hurts and tries to keep it in packed a punch. The ideas were great, the way it's told is dark and quirky. It relied heavily on the ideas and I reveled in them. Sometimes a short story gives bones with some mea [...]

Vamps and shifters just go together, don’t they?Ordinarily they’re begrudging allies against a common foe, but here Alec and Kai are seemingly fated mates. I like that mucking with traditional roles and Black not only broke the chains of interspecies but made this an interracial relationship as well. In the deep South!Alec and Kai are in high school when we meet them and Alec’s a bit of gluttonous vampire. He's compelled and fed on one too many, so he and his keepers are forced to move. Bu [...]

Is it just me who loves to read the stories of the things that go bump in the night? I grew up reading Alfred Hitchcock, Edgar Allen Poe, and Stephen King, to name a few. I've always been fascinated by all things paranormal but the darker, the grittier, the more intense, has always held my attention for longer. Dreamspinner Press's Daily Dose package this year focuses on shifters and there's been some dark and definitely some light. 'They Called Him Nightmare' was everything I wanted it to be.Al [...]

Wow! This is a short story that felt a lot longer than its number of pages made me think it would be. The world created here is fantastic and different from other paranormal situations I have read about. The main characters, Alec and Kai, are intriguing, unusual, and not at all who they seem to be at first glance. The plot held me in suspense, and the emotions overwhelmed me – in a good way.Kai is despised, feared, and bullied because he has midnight-black skin and looks otherworldly. People f [...]

I love short stories because they are perfect when you want to read something but want the satisfaction of the conclusion fairly quickly. They Called Him Nightmare was filled with fantasy and romance that is thrust upon you joyfully. Kai is special, gifted, different. Because of that people make fun of him call him nightmare because of his appearance. No one likes him aside from his Mama… Except Alec. Alec knows different, he IS different. And he’s also Kai’s true mate. This may have been [...]

Read as part of the Boy Meets Boy Review Shifter Sunday Funday for Dreamspinner 2016 Daily Dose: A Walk on the Wild Side Anthology 4 HeartsThis story was intense. I was not expecting that level of intensity from such a short story. Kai just wants to be left alone to live his life in solitude, taking care of his mother, and brooding about life.Alec sees this boy in the halls at his high school, that they call Nightmare, and he cannot get him out of his mind. They connect on a soul deep level, but [...]

ARC provided by the publisher through Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words in exchange for an impartial review. From the 2016 Daily Dose package – A Walk on the Wild Side This short story is my first from this author, and I was pleasantly surprised by the story. It opens with high school student Alec assessing all the others in his class for who will taste the best. A young vampire, he has the ability to put people in thrall, so they have no idea he has had sex with them and drunk their blood. B [...]

Unfortunately, the idea of this story was much better than the execution. The story begins with the two main characters in high school and after a few chapters it skips forward by ten years.Considering the short length of this story those first few chapters of the boys’ first meeting seem rather a waste of words. I think the story would have benefitted from the two men meeting as adults and for Alec to actively pursue a reluctant Kai, as the blurb suggests. There was no reason I could see to k [...]

A vampire's driving obsession for the darkest being that burns with life's turmoil as life seems to be flaming out(full review and additional comments)The inner dialog of the two main characters, especially the vampire's inner musings regarding thirst and power and just what he seeks above all else, just worked so incredibly well for me the story quickly drew my rapt attention. His voice thrummed right through and garnered my interest and enjoyment.I am not sure how to even begin to review this [...]

4.5 StarsFor 26 pages this short story carried quite a punch and surprisingly had a lot of information. The story opens with Kai, known as Nightmare to the kids in school and even to the teachers, for his dark skin and Alec who is known as the golden boy because he comes from the wealthy side of town. Both boys are in high school, at the time, and even though Alec appears to be the one that has it all, underneath he is the real monster that everyone assumes Kai to be. Kai keeps his head down and [...]

Hmm from the shifter point of view this one was really interesting and I liked it. I'm not going to say what kind of shifter "Nightmare" is, but I loved it and would have liked for the story to be longer. What I don't get is the whole "love" aspect of the story because well it didn't feel like they loved each other and more like they wanted to *own* each other. So yeah. I would have liked to have more developement on that. But still enjoyed it. :)

What can I say, other than I adore Deja Black's voice and imagination. This story is short leaving me hungry to know more!!! There is something about Alec that stayed with me. Rai is just unforgettable but Alec's voice is mesmerising for me. This story is engaging with established charismatic characters. I think the cover also complements the story. I hope there will more about these two.

Dual review with Morgan on The Blogger GirlsThis was a pretty intriguing story. I liked that Kai and Alec knew of each other in high school, that even back then they had an attraction towards one another even though they only spoke once. I found the fact that Alec couldn’t forgot about Kai so endearing especially since I didn’t find him that likable. I really adored Kai, though. I didn’t really understand why everyone treated him that way but I guess it goes to show racism is still alive a [...]

An odd story of two creatures; one who lives in the light but brings darkness, and one who hides in darkness but is pure light. Together they can be explosive and it may just be time for them to come together. Interesting creatures and fascinating connection, would have loved to see more.

Kai aka Nightmare is lonely. Most people avoid him, scared of his dark as pitch skin. There are whispers about him yet he ignores it all, focused only on one thing, taking care of his mom. The one person who has loved him fiercely. Alec is loved by all, the quintessential Golden Boy who charms everyone he comes in contact with. But while his light shines bright on the outside, he is nothing but darkness on the inside. Drawn to Kai, he is overcome with the need to possess him and be possessed by [...]

Touch him. Hold his flame. Become the mate he needs. His light and my dark, yin and yang. Balance.Ten years ago, they were meant to be. But fright kept them apart. Alec, a nalapsi, felt unworthy of Kai's love. Kai, not understanding what he is becomes afraid to love thinking he can destroy all things good. It takes Kai's adoptive mother's intervention and subsequent illness to get these two men to understand that they were meant to be together. ARC provided by Dreamspinner Press in exchange for a [...]

Okay I came to this after reading a few of the stories in the 'Walk on the Wild Side' collection. I'd enjoyed what I'd read up to this one. This is dark, and while I usually enjoy dark, no, not this story.Alec is a vampire, that's pretty obvious from the start. He enjoys putting the 'blood bags' in his thrall so he can feed from them and rape them. While the rape aspect isn't explicit on page, Alec's ugly satisfaction over the rapes shines through time and again. I'm not sure if this was supposed [...]

What an interesting story! It’s YA/New adult. Most of the story takes place in high school. Nightmare (Kai) is hiding a secret about who he is, as is Alec. Both need the other but are too young to act on it. They aren’t a typical paranormal – so it’s a surprise reveal at the end.In addition to their hidden attraction there’s a bit of social commentary about black vs white in today’s society. It’s nicely done.I wish there’d been more to this story as the ending was very unsatisfyi [...]

While this is a well written story it is not my favorite genre which I know happens when you purchase a set. But I always feel like it gives me a chance to stretch myself as well. For me the main theme of this story is that love is enough and there is love for everyone. Whether that love is in the form of someone that sets all aside to raise a child left to them or the love of lovers who find in each other the perfect match.
