EDIT: After a couple of weeks I decided to drop a star from my rating. The tl;dr of my original review was basically "good concept, good effort, bad writing, heavy handed at times." Upon further reflection I don't think that is worth 4 stars because it has never even crossed my mind to recommend this book to anyone.I accidentally read this in one sitting? All of Kathryn Burns books are impactful, but this one really hit me square in the chest. The depth of feeling these characters endure is so viscerally expressed that you walk away with the sense that you've really been through something with these people. And yet, Burns maintains her sharp sense of humor throughout, allowing us to really see the characters as full people with both light and dark in their lives.
