On Easter, in the early 1970s, a family is hosting a dinner gathering to remember their husband/father and the other men lost off a sailboat during the Bermuda race over a year before. The mood is necessarily odd, at times forcibly festive. We observe it all through the eyes of the missing boat captain's youngest daughter, Louise, a girl now probably in her mid teens and newly appearing somewhat mature. But she continues to feel like her father's little girl. Also present is her brother Sam, home [...]

Yankee DublinersThis is a very short book indeed to be published under separate cover—a substantial short story, really—but it is a very good one. In a large house in the New England countryside with a view over Boston Bay, members of the family and some neighbors gather for Easter dinner. The time is somewhere around 1970. The story is narrated by the youngest family member, Louisa, a girl who has just entered her teens. Also present are her old French grandmother, in charge of the kitchen, [...]

This short but powerful book about loss and grief takes place over the course of one afternoon in a small New England town in the mid 1970s. A year before a group of men from the town has been lost at sea in an accident and the families of the missing men gather for a memorial. We see the events of the afternoon through the eyes of Lulu, whose father is one of the missing men. Her focus is very much on her brother Sam who is battling his own demons after his return from the fighting in Vietnam. [...]

I'm not quite sure what to think about this novelette. In my view, it felt a bit crowded. Given the storyline of 18 people gathering for a dinner party/memorial for four sailors who disappeared at sea, I suppose that's to be expected and couldn't be avoided. I felt like the narrator's voice and perspective was absorbed by the others' clamoring for attention. Perhaps New Englanders is part of a longer work by Ms. Montgomery? I would be interested in seeing these characters reappear elsewhere, an [...]

It's really closer to a five, but I didn't want it to end thus my rating.A delicious and fast read about a formal family/close friend dinner for 18, except that 4 disappeared the year before. An empty table sits in the corner in their honor.Lulu, the pubescent sassy one, has quite the eye for observation and humor as she tells the tale. The writing is superb, crisp, and visual. I'm there, invited to stand in another corner and observe and this crazy group feels familiar and yet not.Loved it and [...]

I recognized the characters and the mood of sadness and the feeling of fog that permeates the book as New England. I appreciated the variety of characters and attempting to move on. Having said all that – this was good. Interesting character study.
