Last night I went to Doug Ohman's presentation of his new book Libraries of Minnesota and I am just in awe. The pictures are just gorgeous and along with these vivid images are early childhood memories and history lessons from seven Minnesota authors, Will Weaver, Pete Hautman, John Coy, Nancy Carlson, Marsha Wilson Chall, David LaRochelle and Kao Kalia Yang. This book is close to my heart because I can still remember my hometown library and bookmobile. The excitement of story time and just the [...]

Beautiful pictures of Minnesota libraries along with essays by Minnesota authors. I especially enjoyed Pete Hautman's essay "Not Much of a Reader" in which he writes about growing up in a family of 7 children in the 60's. He shows an ironic appreciation of what life for his mother must have been like.

The sixth in photographer Doug Ohman's Minnesota Byways series capturing historic buildings of Minnesota is a collection of photos of libraries in Minnesota accompanied by essays from Minnesota writers sharing memories of libraries. This is a really fun read for any library lover, but as a Minnesota librarian who has worked at some of the branches shown, it is especially fun. The photos are beautiful and I loved reading the essays. The only reason I did not give the book five stars is that the ph [...]

Contributors build their entries around photographs Doug Ohman took of seventy-four libraries in forty Minnesota counties. The little short stories will resonant with readers as they think back on first encounters or escapes to their local library. Although the book includes libraries from across the state, a majority of the entries cover the Twin Cities Metropolitan area and surrounding counties.

The pictures are great and many of the articles are fabulous too. Lots of fun facts about Minnesota libraries and library history in general. I nice quick read. Each chapter was written by a different author. A couple of them I did not care for the writing at all and a few of them I thought were fabulous- so with that in mind, I rated the book 3 stars as a compromise.

An appetizer version of the book I've always wanted: gorgeous color photos of libraries in my home state (road trip ideas!), mostly exterior but some interior shots as well, interspersed with short essays from local authors about their memories of libraries. Neither section is long enough to satisfy me, but it's a pleasant work.

Some of the essays were interesting but I would have liked to see more pictures of Minnesota libraries.
