This slim volume is packed with insight about all of Bruegel's major works - the milieu of Flemish culture and his context among contemporaries and later imitators. The development of his work is well chronicled - from earlier proverbial catalogues packed into busy villagescapes to later richly rendered individuals captured in poignant moments.
